Forte Mare
Forte Mare Fortress ("Sea Fortress") is the main symbol of Herceg Novi and one of Montenegro's most atmospheric cultural venues.
Founded in 1382 by the city's founder, Bosnian King Tvrtko I, the citadel changed its appearance over the centuries: the Ottomans gave it its scale in the 16th–17th centuries, the Venetians later rebuilt it, and Austro-Hungarian engineers gave the fortress its final form in the 19th century.
Since 1952, the upper terrace has served as a summer stage and became home to one of the oldest open-air cinemas on the Adriatic. The unique acoustics and the atmosphere of the ancient walls make the venue ideal for a wide range of events:
- theatrical performances and festivals;
- music concerts and fashion shows;
- the annual Herceg Novi Film Festival.
Guests can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor, the entrance to the bay, and the Old Town. Inside, elements of medieval architecture have survived: narrow staircases, casemates, and the Sea Gate (Porta di Mare).
