The short story was born out of Andrić’s experience of living with Bosnian Franciscans in Ovčarevo near Travnik and in Zenica during the First World War. It is part of Andrić’s literary oeuvre featuring friars as the main characters, known as the Franciscan cycle, whose action takes place in old friary monasteries in Central Bosnia.
'Čaša' is set in the monastery of St. Francis in Guča Gora. The main characters are fra Petar and fra Nikola Granić, known as Mumin. Through these characters, Andrić presents his view of two major themes: Bosnia and emigration. In Mumin’s monologue, Andrić gave a concise literary portrait of Bosnia and of his own literary commitments. The short story explores the question of leaving or staying in Bosnia, which Andrić considered during his time in exile.
The short story was published in 1940, when Andrić was serving as the plenipotentiary minister and extraordinary envoy of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in Germany. The performance premiered in Guča Gora, Travnik, in 2025.
