The play “Jelena Anžujska” sheds light on the life of the famous medieval queen of the Nemanjić dynasty, ruler of the Zeta region, wife of King Uroš, and mother of kings Dragutin and Milutin.
Jelena Anžujska was a great enlightener and humanist who, balancing between the Catholic coast and Orthodox Raška, was beloved by both the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople. Educated and prudent, respected and loved by the people, she had a considerable influence on the political events of her time.
The play is based on a text by Jelena Kajgo and directed by Tatjana Mandić Rigonat, while production is credited to the Knjaževsko-srpski teatar from Kragujevac and the Ćirilicom festival from Budva. Marija Bergam plays the leading role of Jelena Anžujska.
