The play combines elements of comedy, an essay on theater, and theater within theater. It deals with the (un)reliable memories of the French actress Sarah Bernhardt, which are recorded in her later years by her secretary Georges Pitu. Pitu is also Sarah's acting partner, who mainly plays female roles—Sarah's sisters, mothers, and occasionally a male character.
