Ivo Andrić House

The house of Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić in Herceg Novi is today a center of the city's cultural life and a popular draw for tourists who value art and history. The estate now operates under the concept of an "eco-museum" or "community museum," offering visitors not only a memorial exhibition but also a rich program of events. Every year the house hosts the "Cultural Summer" project, featuring book presentations, theater performances, concerts, and lectures with leading regional cultural figures.

Yet the site's current status as a popular art venue is the result of a dramatic and eventful history that makes this place truly unique:

  • The writer's only home. This is the only estate that Ivo Andrić personally designed and built with his own funds during his lifetime. He chose Herceg Novi, inspired by its "eternal sun and greenery," and spent the happiest five years of his life here with his wife, Milica Babić (from 1963 to 1968).
  • A period of decline and loss. After his wife's sudden death in 1968, Andrić never returned to the house again. Over the following decades the building was put to unrelated uses: it housed a kindergarten, a tavern-restaurant, and a writers' club. Commercial use led to the deterioration of the monument — the interiors were altered, and only a handful of original furniture pieces survived.
  • Revival from ruin. A large-scale restoration, completed in 2021, literally saved the building's "skeleton" from collapse. All the extraneous additions from the restaurant era were removed, and the memorial garden was recreated with botanical precision based on a list of 51 plant species compiled by Andrić himself.

Today visitors can explore the unique exhibition "New Paths, Faces, and Landscapes of Andrić," where personal photographs and archival documents sit alongside modern interactive technology such as smart totems. Andrić's house has become a symbolic "bridge" between past and future, transformed from an abandoned building into one of the most prestigious venues for dialogue and creativity on the Adriatic coast.
