Mirandolina! What a woman!
The innkeeper Mirandolina is one of the most celebrated female characters in the history of theatre. She celebrates the authentic strength of women, their intelligence, wisdom, eros of life, creativity, and longing for independence and freedom. In her, the primal strength of woman finds its exciting and witty form.
Karlo Goldoni wrote the comedy The Mistress of the Inn in 1751, and it was first performed in 1753 in Venice. Since then, Mirandolina has lived on theatrical stages, outwitting men and the Knight of Ripafratta, a woman-hater, fighting for the dignity of both herself and her sex. She is an eighteenth-century feminist.
In male fantasies, she is a she-devil, Venus, a Padrona, a wanton, a whore, a saint and a sorceress. She is a siren who enchants men and robs them of their reason. A dangerous woman. Whether they imagine her as a siren or a pin-up, in any visual form she is a symbol of a self-aware, rebellious woman. Within her, she carries the experience and tactics from various eras in which women seduced men and waged war against them in the ruthless battle of the sexes.
What is Mirandolina’s fate in a world ruled by Mammon, money and greed? Are freedom and independence possible, or are they merely grand illusions? What about love? What is the relationship between love and money, Eros and Mammon? For Bodrijara, art is an act of seduction. Mirandolina will tell us the story of herself, as an artist who plays out her life in the theatre, constructing and deconstructing the narrative of a woman who values her own freedom above all else.
